What Are the Disadvantages of a Mini Split System?
The main drawbacks are higher upfront cost per zone, indoor heads that are visible on the wall, reduced heating output in deep cold without a backup, required filter cleaning every few weeks, and poor results when the unit is sized or placed wrong.
Why Is the Upfront Cost Higher?
A single zone ductless system usually costs more than adding a window unit and less than a full ducted system. The math changes with zones. Each additional indoor head adds equipment, refrigerant line, condensate routing, and labor. A four zone system can cost as much as a complete central system.

How Do They Look Inside the Room?
The indoor head is a white rectangle mounted high on the wall, roughly three feet wide. Outside, a line set runs from each head down to the outdoor unit and is usually covered by a plastic raceway. In a period home in Peoria or a finished living room, some owners dislike it. Ceiling cassette and floor mounted styles exist but cost more and need the right framing.
Do Mini Splits Work in Central Illinois Winters?
Cold climate models keep useful output well below zero, but every heat pump loses capacity as the temperature drops. On our coldest nights a properly designed system either has electric backup heat or a furnace paired with it. If someone tells you a mini split alone will heat your whole house at 10 below with no backup, ask for the manufacturer's capacity chart at that temperature.

What Maintenance Do Owners Underestimate?
Mini splits have washable filters in every indoor head, and they need rinsing every few weeks during heavy use. Skip it and airflow drops, efficiency falls, and the coil gets dirty. Indoor coils also grow mold in humid conditions if condensate does not drain properly.
More heads means more units to clean. A four zone system is four filters, four coils, and four condensate paths.
When Is a Mini Split Still the Right Call?
Ductless earns its keep when:
- You are conditioning an addition, sunroom, garage, or attic with no ductwork

- Running new duct would mean tearing up plaster or losing closet space
- You want room by room control and lower bills in the spaces you actually use
For a whole house with sound ducts, a conventional system usually wins on cost per conditioned square foot.
